Why a Korean VIN May Not Be Recognized

If a Korean VIN shows an error or no result, the cause is usually one of the five reasons below.

1. A character was mistyped

The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN, so a VIN containing them is rejected. On documents, O and 0 or I and 1 are easy to mix up. Count the characters too: a VIN always has exactly 17. See the VIN validation guide for the full checklist.

2. The vehicle was not built in Korea

Korea Car VIN decodes vehicles built in Korea. Their VINs start with K. Hyundai and Kia vehicles built in other countries use other codes and are outside our sales data.

Codes that make up at least 1% of each brand's records.

3. A check digit notice is not an error

VINs of cars made for the Korean market often do not satisfy the 9th-character check digit rule that North American VINs must follow. When that happens we still decode the VIN and only show a notice.

4. The VIN pattern is not in our records yet

We decode VINs by matching them against 465,000+ sales records of Korean vehicles. When no vehicle with a similar VIN has been sold through our records, we cannot answer. This happens most often with very new models, rare trims and commercial trucks.

5. Some fields show a dash

When a VIN is found, make, model and model year are always shown. Fuel type, engine volume, transmission and vehicle type are estimated, and we show a dash when sales records of the same VIN pattern disagree too much to give a reliable answer.

FAQ

Does a 'not found' result mean the VIN is fake?

No. It means the VIN pattern is not in our sales records. The vehicle may be rare, very new, or built outside Korea. Compare the VIN with the registration certificate to rule out a typo.

Why are some fields shown as a dash?

Fuel type, engine volume, transmission and vehicle type are estimated from sales records of vehicles with the same VIN pattern. When those records disagree too much, we leave the field empty instead of guessing.

Will my VIN be recognized later?

Possibly. Our data grows with new sales records, so a VIN that is not recognized today may be recognized after an update.
